About Plaque Psoriasis

Potential Psoriasis treatment in Michigan

Plaque psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that is characterized by raised, itchy, red, and scaly skin covered with white or silver scales. The plaques occur due to the skin cells multiplying at a faster rate which causes raised buildups that can be itchy and painful. It most commonly occurs on the elbows, knees, and scalp but it can also appear anywhere else on the body. For many people with the condition, scalp psoriasis is very common. It causes plaques of scales or crust to develop on the scalp. This condition is not contagious and cannot be transferred through touch. However, it can be passed down in families through genetics.

Causes of Psoriasis

There is a combination of factors that could lead to this skin condition, although there is no exact cause. There are certain triggers that cause the immune system to go into overdrive which ultimately leads to the skin multiplying quicker. Normally, the skin cells are replaced every 10 to 30 days but with this skin condition, the cells are replaced every 3 to 4 days. This causes the old cells to build up as the new cells replace them which is why we see silver or white scales around the red patches.

Some of the most common triggers that can cause psoriasis flare-ups are:

  • Cuts, scrapes, or injuries
  • Emotional Stress
  • Medications like blood pressure medicines, antimalarial drugs, lithium, NSAIDs, etc.
  • Strep infections
